Tips for D-I-Y Stationery

Here are a few things to consider when doing-it-yourself.

Firstly, if you are doing it yourself, start by deciding the envelope size and let that determine the size of your invitation. Envelopes come in a range of standard sizes, don't make the mistake of designing a beautiful odd-sized invite only to find that you cannot find an envelope size to match. Custom-sized envelopes can be made, but they will be costly.

Secondly, check to see the postage rate for the envelope size you have chosen. Square and odd shaped envelopes may add extra to your mailing costs, so if you are going to post most of your invitations be sure to factor the postage costs into your budget.

Thirdly, purchase just one sheet of the material that you are thinking of printing onto and test it to make sure that it works before going ahead and ordering the lot.

Find out if your computer printer is an inkjet or laser printer, this is important and will enable us to help you select an appropriate paper or cardstock.

Make a sample up. Don't panic if it doesn't look professional. Print it, cut it together with your kitchen scissors and whatever adhesive you have. Then work out how many invitations you will need, and either visit or post the sample to us along with the quantity you have in mind. We'll calculate the materials that you need, and recommend the best way to stick them together.

When making your invitations DO NOT use glue! Especially with metallic paper and cardstocks, glue may look fab when wet but when it dries you will have lumpy bumpy invites. So always use double-sided tape, it is neater and will give a professional finish.

There are only a couple of instances where you would need to use glue, like sticking a bulky flower or shell onto an invite. When visiting or talking to us, ask what is the best way to stick your chosen materials together, and we will advise you.

If you are using paper fasteners (or brads, split pins, studs, as some call them) always do a three layer invite. So that the messy back of the metal pins are hidden between the second and third layer.

Always remember too – keep it simple! The more elaborate your design, the harder the assembly will be.

Our after hours appointments are aimed to suit those who work full-time or those who are travelling from a distance to visit us. They can be either on a weekday night or on a Sunday. Please remember to book ahead for the Sunday appointments as they are very popular.
